Abstract
This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of the self-compassion cultivation program based on healing stage of traumatic disorder and cultivation of self-compassion on improving binge eating behavior and related problems in young women with a tendency to binge eating. Among the women in their 20s creened by bulimia test, 29 participants were allocated into the self-compassion cultivation program group consisted of six sessions(twice a week, about one hour per session) or the untreated control group. Revising the existing self-compassion cultivation program, this study constructed a program with education for self-compassion and binge eating, healing stage of traumatic disorder, and mindfulness meditation practice. All participants rated their level of self-compassion, binge eating, general psychological distress, depression, anxiety, stress symptoms, emotional dysregulation, psychological well-being and emotional eating on self-rating scales at pre-program, post-program and at the 2-week follow-up. The level of self-compassion, binge eating behavior, depressive symptoms, and emotional eating were significantly improved in the self-compassion cultivation program group compared to the control group. Also participants in self-compassion cultivation program group also showed an improvement in psychological well-being at post-program and 2-week follow-up as compared with pre-program.. However, there were no significant differences in the level of the general psychological distress, anxiety, and stress symptoms between the two groups over different time periods. These results suggest that dealing with traumatic memory and cultivating self-compassion can be promising interventions for improving binge eating and psychological problems in young women with a tendency to binge eating behavior.
